Is one of the manual techniques often employed by a Physiotherapist and is one of the hands on skills that are used by a physio in conjunction with other modalities of treatment. Whilst massage is frequently utilised to mobilise soft tissue injuries eg. muscle strain, tennis elbow and ligamentous injuries, this form of physio is also an effective adjunct when used as a pre-curser to manipulation treatment for both spinal and peripheral joint problems.

Manipulation as performed by a Chartered Physiotherapist is usually a gentle non violent hands on form of physio treatment and is effective in treating both spinal and peripheral joints, often in conjunction with some other form of physio treatment eg. massage and/or and remedial exercise programme.

North East Physio - Traction Treatment

Traction is a specialised form of physio treatment most usually performed by a Physiotherapist for the treatment of various spinal problems and injuries by means of gently stretching the appropriate section of the spinal column. This can be achieved by various methods eg. manually, mechanically as in the case of a specially designed traction table or even by means of a weight and pulley system. The two most common spinal areas treated by traction are the neck and the lower part of the back, known as the lumbar spine.

Short Wave Diathermy more commonly referred to as SWD is one of the many forms of electrotherapy available for use by a Physio and in basic terms is a method whereby a deep heating effect may be introduced into the various structures of the body. It is a very soothing and pain relieving form of physio treatment and is particularly comforting in cases of joint arthritis, muscle spasm or when it is necessary to induce relaxation of tightened anatomical structures, often in conjunction with some other physio treatments, eg. massage.

Ultrasound physio treatment is administered by means of the application of high frequency sound energy, beyond the range of human hearing, when applied to the various soft tissue structures of the human body. It is a very soothing and gentle but effective form of physiotherapy treatment which is very beneficial in a wide range of medical conditions such as muscle strains, joint and ligament injuries, low back pain of a muscular origin and even whiplash injuries of the neck. This form of physio treatment can also be beneficial when used to treat neuralgic pain such as that which can sometimes be a consequence of shingles or amputation.

This is a physio treatment by means of low frequency electrical currents. These are usually applied using two or sometimes three separate fields wherein each one is individually controlled in terms of frequency and intensity. The interaction between the circuits then produces a pain relieving effect. At the same time the muscles around the area being treated can be stimulated to encourage the restoration of normal function and activity, thus we can reduce pain and work muscles simultaneously thereby hastening recovery. This form of physio treatment can prove to be extremely beneficial in a wide variety of conditions, ranging from low back pain, “frozen shoulder”, nerve root entrapment, whiplash injury and even ankle and knee sprains.

Laser therapy is physio treatment by means of high intensity light energy. In fact the word Laser is an acronym formed from the initial letters of “Light Amplification through the Stimulation of Emitted Radiation”. It is used by Chartered Physiotherapists due to its multi functional aspects. As such it reduces localised inflammation (as occurs in traumatised areas of the body), reduces pain levels and stimulates cell metabolism so as to promote and accelerate the body’s own healing and regeneration mechanism. There is virtually no area of the body which cannot be treated by this totally painless form of physio treatment. It is therefore an essential weapon in the armoury of a Chartered Physiotherapist to treat conditions where pain and tissue damage are present.

These are forms of physio treatment which utilises light energy from the opposite ends of the electro-magnetic spectrum, and as such are used for diverse and different reasons. Infra-red is the application of a superficial form of heat treatment where this is indicated as a result of injury of some type, particularly if other forms of thermal physio treatment cannot be applied.

Ultra Violet physio treatment is used by Physiotherapists to treat a variety of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, alopecia, or eczema. It should not be confused with Infra-red which is a totally different form of treatment.

Exercise Therapy

Many conditions particularly those of a spinal nature can be alleviated, if not completely rectified, by means of instruction in a regime of postural remedial exercises. This will often need to be carried out in conjunction with some other means of physio treatment to reduce the symptoms caused by a poor posture. In this respect various aspects of the patients lifestyle need to be considered to ascertain whether there may be an occupational factor and/or some recreational or domestic activity that is contributing to the problem. When this appears to be the case relevant advice may be given taking into consideration a variety of ergonomic factors.

Respiratory Treatment (Including Postural Drainage)

Certain respiratory conditions can be treated by means of a system of breathing exercises and postural drainage. These are techniques used by Chartered Physiotherapists whereby different areas of the lungs can be cleared of secretions of mucus, which can accumulate in conditions such as Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis or Cystic Fibrosis. The techniques involve positioning the patient in the most advantageous posture and can be augmented by manual techniques to loosen some of the secretions and thereby aid expectoration

This is a specific system of physio treatments utilised by specially trained Chartered Physiotherapists. It can be adapted and used in a variety of situations such as the treatment of Cerebral Palsy or to aid the rehabilitation of patients following Strokes (more properly known as Cerebro Vascular Accident).

Acupuncture is a system of treatment which is generally attributable to the ancient Chinese but more recently, by means of carbon dating, has been found to pre-date the Oriental techniques by approximately one thousand years, based on evidence discovered in some Egyptian Pyramids. It is used by many Physio’s and involves inserting needles into specific acupuncture points in the body to alleviate pain. These Acupuncture points can also be stimulated non-invasively by means of electro-acupuncture or by digital pressure, when the physio treatment is then referred to as Acupressure.
